It was compulsory for all non-profit and charity organisations to join. If they did not register, then they would lose their tax-exempt status. The tax-exempt status can be revoked if the Australian Government considers that to be appropriate. The Australian Non-Profit And Charity Register was set up about a month after the Royal Commission Into Institutional Child Abuse had commenced. I do not think that this was a coincidence. Changing subjects here, there have been Royal Commissions into Australia's banking system and also Australia's aged care system. There are changes that need to be made in these areas as well.
