Leonard was not only a great poet, he was a great and inspiring singer-songwriter.
His music covered just about every type of music.
You can read more about him on Wikipedia than I could add here.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Cohen

    But I like this song.

    “Stories Of The Street”

The stories of the street are mine, the Spanish voices laugh.
The Cadillacs go creeping now through the night and the poison gas,
and I lean from my window sill in this old hotel I chose,
yes one hand on my suicide, one hand on the rose.
I know you've heard it's over now and war must surely come,
the cities they are broke in half and the middle men are gone.
But let me ask you one more time, O children of the dusk,
All these hunters who are shrieking now oh do they speak for us?

And where do all these highways go, now that we are free?
Why are the armies marching still that were coming home to me?
O lady with your legs so fine O stranger at your wheel,
You are locked into your suffering and your pleasures are the seal.

The age of lust is giving birth, and both the parents ask
the nurse to tell them fairy tales on both sides of the glass.
And now the infant with his cord is hauled in like a kite,
and one eye filled with blueprints, one eye filled with night.

O come with me my little one, we will find that farm
and grow us grass and apples there and keep all the animals warm.
And if by chance I wake at night and I ask you who I am,
O take me to the slaughterhouse, I will wait there with the lamb.

With one hand on the hexagram and one hand on the girl
I balance on a wishing well that all men call the world.
We are so small between the stars, so large against the sky,
and lost among the subway crowds I try to catch your eye.

Leonard was truly brilliant in so many ways
as so many men are , who in truth when we
observe what man was truly designed to reflect
and to appreciate those things , and the sadness
that many never truly recognize those qualities
    true source .

    Pursue Mastering Knowledge

Oh , Paddy worked the railway
but he had a midnight plan
he’d learn to strum those guitar strings
and be the leader of the band

He worked them hard day and night
and stayed them in his stride
He’d master all the skills of men
and he’d master all their pride

And in the time he had to spare
    there were portraits to create
    He would capture nature’s beauty
    and the things men venerate

    He’d climb the highest mountains
    and ski their rolling slopes
    He would sing of desperation’s
and tell the tales of men’s hopes

He’d lead them on a merry run
    of soiree’s and reverie
    He’d drink in life’s obession’s
compose songs of the deep blue sea

What end is there to what man can do
of learning all in life one can
    what to teach the generations
give to all what you understand

Many dreams of men go unfulfilled
so many here have lost their way
Their voices have been chocked with dust
    and their knowledge passed away

Wake up each day with thanksgiving
for all the choices given you
You were created to enjoy this life
And it’s gifts are of true value

    POSSESSED OF LOVE

    You have taken us captive
and we are possessed by your desire
have made our hearts your tabernacle
and your name upon our lips like wine
    Loving you alters our consciousness
    Your presence fills our table
it is fully laden and overflowing
with you our cups are always full
    and family is completed
    Your goodness follows us
like the winters rain fills the rivers
here the garden paths are carefully tended
    filled with every delight
drenched with the dew and painted in every hue
    a sachet of fragrances
    that please the senses
as those of frankincense and myrrh
here we can adore all your activity
    which have brought such pleasures
freely given so that all can enjoy them
    even when night comes
you have left the light well in sight
therefore our hearts are tender towards you
You have bestowed upon us all that is yours
have entrusted us with all their care
Who will not sing of your generosity
and lips which call you glorious
Who will love you as much as Life
Here no ill will can can live
no dis ease of mind or soul
    to cure the hearts
and to forever make them whole
Oh tender heart you make us soft
where no thorny word can escape our lips
    where words kiss your soul
embrace the mind you hold within
forgive you of all your errs to other men
be still be still that place within
where all your errs do hide
for here the closet doors are open wide
and all that is bad has escaped your grasp
Because we want to do it for you
for we delight in giving you Joy
It pleases us to see you happy
and seeing you want for nothing
where every activity satisfy's your life
    furnishes every existent need
Where you have no need to ask for anything
for everything you could possibly want
is freely within your own desire to have
But remember that this is the gift
and the example you are to live and pass to others

    This is as content

.......... As I have ever been
    I want for nothing
    but I am concerned
    .......... about everything
    life in this system

    .......... is tenuous
    I can have abundance today
and tomorrow be forsaken and forgotten
    I have been homeless
not by my choice but that of others

    .......... whose care for me
was so remote even the daily
    necessities were of little concern
regarding the state of my being

    .......... I survived that
    all father husband mother forebears
I knew so little about care
    love duty compassion understanding loyalty
    It has taken one lifetime

    .......... to ultimately realize
how expletively little I was taught
I have examined the “finest example”
    that has walked among “MEN”
    and found myself “wanting”

    .......... to be like him
to love his nature ,,to copy his person
    the most excellent character
Whose rightness could not be argued
whose reason could not be contended
whose compassion could not be matched
    and whose understanding was
    beyond what we could know
    I have loved him
since the day of our introduction
    I have studied his words
    and his activity
and I have found “no one”
who is the like of him
    I have met and studied
    so many beautiful minds

.......... yet none of them are his
none can match the sheer perfection

    .......... of your thoughts
or reach the energy of your activity
the more I look at you
I am in awe of the grace
fully reflected in a life so precious
    that I cannot but proclaim
the depth of your exceeding excellence
like a bonfire set on a hill
none can avoid seeing your light
or be drawn unto it’s warmth
and the comfort of those who gather
    together
    .......... to embrace your radiance

    VOCATION

    My Beloved is to me
............. as the light of a thousand suns

    which fully permeates the expanse
    and those beloved
    ............. bask in his warmth

    You have no equal
who is the perfect reflection of truth
    but you display
all the copious richness of Life
therefore my delight is in you
    Your generosity is exhibited
    in the furnishing and treasuries
    which endow every accommodation
which supports us plentifully in every way
    you are distinguishable
    an accurate representation
    of the comprehensiveness of Love
and Love is the true source of inspiration
    no other voice offers
instructions in the Way of Life
    ............. to be searched for

    or presents the greatest benevolence
from the least of us to the greatest
    Order frames all that exists
from the heavens to the smallest particles
............. an infinite procession of law

    which threads the whole cosmos
    I have dug deeply
to find every true gem ............. they contain

and every vein of it’s wealth
so I might be filled and exceedingly delighted
    in it’s every encompassing perspective
how brilliant are the colors of Life
The potential for learning is limitless
to seek the mirror of it’s reality
............. I ache to be saturated with it

though I hold you here inside
and your voice fills the song within my ears
I see in me how short am I to match your aria
oh resplendent man who fills my heart
with a beauty so longed for
that I wish to recline in your presence
and to listen to your wisdom
that my eyes of my soul are opened
and the wounds of life become healed
and that the heart is made tender
and no longer indolent about it’s depths
    Is this a private thought
or have all those who look upon you
been so affected to change the course
    ............. of their lives

    EXPRESSION

I’ve poured my 1st cup of coffee
actually added sugar which I rarely do
    but you are not here
    the true sweetener of life
    my heart , my joy
for that 1st embrace every morning
    where your face is what
.................... I see before all others

how should I get through it without you
I desire to wrap you with my thoughts
.................... before all activities take place today

To gaze into your eyes and hear
your voice which moves with pleasantness
into the deepest part of my soul
I cannot..... , ...... no will not live without

your love resting in my heart of hearts
Nay..... , ..... to be empty of it is death itself

and I have lived in it’s darkness
the tendrils of it’s clouds which seeps
    through the slightest cracks
........ in the face of Love

But you oh my Darling One
    the Flame that burns forever
in my heart and leads me in a true walk
when Love itself is pleasing beyond measure
and like manna we feed on it alone
for to suffer it’s loss is the walking dead
    and life’s abundance and beauty
    has become a scorched wilderness
and possibilities are only unfertile seeds
So I will greet you today
    .................... in my consciousness

though you do not stand now before me
because it is this Love that I live for
and my care for you is above all else existing

    Matthew 22:36-40 ESV

36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

    CATHEDRAL

My surroundings were the monumental monarchs of
the ancient forest , the spires and goliath's whose
pillars scrape the sky . Where wisps of mist like
ribbons descend upon the declines of these great
edifices in a mornings dawn or dusk . Here the
monarchs tower like pillars in a venerable and
timeworn Temple. Worthy of being a place where one
can bend in adoration of the handiwork of the Living God .
The tent and cathedral built by the work of Life and Love
in which resides every consideration of learning it's
secrets and diving into the deepest well of knowing
and being known . Within it's abodes of the centuries
old timber lives the diversity of beings whose lives
are sheltered . My delight in their activity , the
music of wolves , coyote and hooves clatter of startled
herds of Elk , but not so different from mans cities
of sky-scrapers , predators and prey and the seeming
endless scurry of the hive mind. At least in the
forests the bee hives produce honey and wasp hives
produce predators, the seeming dichotomy of that which
is natural and that which man has constructed .
But Cities give me no joy , opposed as they are
to the soft walk of elk , bucks, doe and fawn on down
to the smallest of creatures upon strewn leaves ,
evergreen needles , and moss of the mountains trails .
Where ones trek can rise to the sprawling scree surrounding
the peaks and spine of the high ranges where the ptarmigan ,
hare , pica and bighorn are not forced to walk on trails
made by others. Where convenience is traded for sheer
naked beauty. I have spent time in many a forest from
    the Rockies , Sierra's , Cascades , coastal ranges
having bathed in the snow melt and had serious brain
freeze from ice cold creeks of living water . Sat by
waterfalls cascading into broad streams and swimming in the
mountains pools hidden the rocky clefts in glades of fern.
Why then would I desire city life. Having wrapped wild
caught fish in wild grape leaves steamed under heated
rocks of an outdoor fire pit . Having wandered the
wilds among the Cypress , Cedar ,Fir , Pine , Spruce ,
Redwood , Sequoia , Oak , Vine Maple and Manzanita ,
running my fingers over the bark and needles, crushing
the evergreens for their fragrance , the scents of grass
    and clover ,Indian paintbrush , tiger-lilies , trillium ,
the small purple wild mountain iris , buttercups , bluebells
and lily of the valley. Mountain sides of foxglove rooms so
replete with beauty one can barely cover their names ,
staying in the log lodge and foraging for blueberries ,
huckleberries , matsutake , chantrelle , and puffballs
in the cornucopia of her storehouses . The sprays of
wildflowers gathered to garnish a woodland picnic in her
high alters and naves. Where contemplation's are worthy
of prayers and praise for such lofty things as these
that adorn rooms worthy of survey and inspection .
Explored regions "uninhabited" by the constructs of the
cities and concrete .All of it the house that God built for
the habitation of children with all that could possibly
delight found within ones reaches . The dappled light
glittering like glass stained windows that capture the
eyes and rivet the attention to every little nuance
of it's shades and hues . But even here the denizens
of tar and concrete tentacles are creeping towards the
obliteration of it's beauty razing , denuding and polluting
her sanctuary where one fears mans will corrupt her as he
has his so called "houses of God" .

    Rev 11
    The nations were angry,
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,
and for rewarding your servants the prophets
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small—
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

    WANDERLUST

My heart sours with every breath of wonder
    and mind moves more rapidly
when I am in love with Life
    temporarily safe from the mediocrity
    and sludge of society's relentless
    degradation of earth's vast wealth
a flight of pondering's and evaluations
an absorption with the august and finesse
of existence tethered to this spectacular
little blue nugget "hanging upon nothing"
my flight is carried by scarlet macaws
    lorikeets , budgies , toucans
It leaps from tree to tree
    with the spider monkeys
and wave upon wave of fish in the sea
and the search to know what is not commonly seen
Curiosity remains unbroken to this day
    desire to continue to learn
has remained levitated throughout my term here
    what is unknown and unfamiliar
still holds a need for exploration
a game my mind plays with itself
    which can quickly change course
I am minutely envious of those
    who have traveled the world
and filmed the grandness of earth's glory
    from the historical archaeology
    to the minutest creatures unseen
    by the human eye
I relish these films as though
    I might be present
But I don't live in the city
so I look out upon the green coastal forest
where a variety of wildlife traverses my grounds
and the sea breezes and the surf sing songs
and perhaps my time here is scrap
compared to what men see as lives they envy
but I am able to stretch the expanses
    and gather my meandering into
something far bigger than my grains of sand
on the beach along the sea coast ranges
and the watch towers of thought
    are under my own construction
    and guided within the framework
    of the exaltation of Life
