Jesus prophetic statements in Luke 21, Matthew 24 and Mark 13 all start with a ministry which goes out into the world saying "Jesus already returned".

“Look out that you are not misled, for many will come on the basis of my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The due time is near.’ Do not go after them"

The definition of "parousia" is quite important.

curious about this scripture. 'the breath of his mouth' is sometimes written 'the spirit of his mouth'

i wonder if this might be an expression of people or a contingent who are stirred to speak against the lawless one at the presence of Christ. The lawless one a i read it is an earthly entity a man or a composite contingent. i cant percieve of the ressurected christ giving his direct attention to speak at an earthly opposed entity. That isnt much of 'a thing' in scripture,,,, that a glorious heavenly being addresses earthly enemy entities by speaking to them. also christ is the original 'word'. As he is present as a 'similar king' now to Jehovah (hopefully that isnt inappropriate to say, even if it is inaccurate) is the spirit or breath of his mouth issuances of expose' by those who personify his intents with effect. i think Paul was writting to Thessolonica from Corinth where his verbalisations against faker leaders hadn't gone so well at that time even with his potential to opperate i an inspired condition. powerful people are sometimes brought down through expose', there seems to be alot of that happening generally at this time.. yet the finaly of being brought to nothing is through power.

Example: QEII's Son Andrew has lost his public viability through verbal exposure.Although he hasn't actually lost his home holdings or finance which would take an extrodinary move of legal power. He is discredited though from representation giving credibility to the house that created his stature or other social drives (like an inability to make 'an image to the beast').

So the singularly directed outworking of 2 Thess 2:8 definately is written in two aspects 1. an effect associated with the mouth. 2 an effect associated with parousia. I am supposing that is a tangible discernable dynamic.

i always liked the cross referencing method that suggests finding every mention of something and making an overall estimation. It is not fullproof, you cant figure out all the mysteries with it but in the absence of inclination i appreciate the humble pragmatism of it. I know its associated with Russell I dont know if he adopted this method or refined it. Especially in an age without computers.

Russel is almost like a folklore character to me, the fact that he was an apprentice tailor in lieu of the bridal attire qualification in prophesy is not lost on me bro.

“Whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.”

What is going to be destroyed? Not Satan but his system, the nominal Church (both mother and daughters).

What is the “spirit” of Jesus’ mouth? Jesus will consume the Wicked One with the spirit of his mouth and destroy with the epiphania of his parousia. “Consume” means destroy—they are synonymous terms here. The technique of couplets and dual expression is often used
for emphasis, especially in the Psalms. The same thing is said two different ways to reaffirm and strengthen a statement. (Of course sometimes a difference in meaning is intended. Only with the help of God’s Holy Spirit can we determine the sense correctly.) Verse 8 is
emphasizing the destruction of the man of sin. Jesus will consume, he will destroy; that is, there will be complete eradication. In the first epistle, Paul said the trouble would come suddenly, as the birth pang (1 Thess. 5:3). Now, in this second epistle, Paul was again
stressing the destruction, and was not indicating a gradual process.

This verse shows that the epiphania is future. If the epiphania had started, there would be enough information to destroy the man of sin.

    Thanks for your thoughts

Its an interesting expression for sure.

Im not certain about the stringency of the timing aspects partly because of the way scripture deals with it. In the sense that the expression 'the hour is late' was applied to the first century' expressions such as 'there will be no futher delay'. 'the master delaying' 'only the father knows the hour'.... whatever i think about it doesnt really matter. i appreciate being able to consider perspectives, thank you.

Paul's statement is reflected in John's vision as to the dynamics perfectly as to the spirit of the mouth and brightness.

Whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.”

16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sunshining in all its brilliance.
