While reading Jan’s comment comparing the worship of Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image, Jan states “The golden image was not a spiritual concept, but a real thing.” I have to disagree in the concept. It was a spiritual concept. It was not their “literal god”, it represented the god of the Babylonians. So, it can be considered as a “spiritual representation”. The same holds true about the “fruit” that Eve took and ate. Although it was a literal fruit, it represented God’s right to rule his creations. Adam was not God, but the “image” of God. The Hebrew word which we translate to image, is tselem (tseh-lem), having the meaning “to shade”, or a shadow. The next time you go outside on a sunny day, look down. What do you see? It’s not really YOU. It’s a shadow of YOU.

This Hebrew word is also the Aramaic word used in Daniel 3, describing the golden image. It was a literal structure made of gold. It had literal dimensions, but it represented the spiritual idea of the god of the Babylonians.

We have to remember that all of the Revelation was spiritual. It was given in “signs” that represented future spiritual events, and those, would have literal consequences. The “mark” on the forehead and hand is Spiritual. It is not a visible “mark”. It represents a persons “thoughts”=ideas=forehead, and the “right hand”=power=actions. What people think and do that is not what God wants us to do.

Here are some spiritual things that people do: salute the flag of your nation (represents a government). Use your hand of power to help these governments, by supporting their ideas, voting for their representatives.
Following false worship in religious organizations that promote these governments. Following false prophets.
Believing these organizations and governments will save the world. These are both spiritual acts. Give your mind and actions to the world. ( Lu 4:5-7 ) If YOU fail to follow them, YOU will not be accepted, and eventually YOU will not be able to buy, sell, or trade.

Hi Jan,
I had a hard time finding this post again. What I wanted to add was that certain residents here in the USA are destroying the historical “statues” and, “monuments” because they represent their local “gods” and heroes. They represent their idea of leaders, like the ancient gods of Babylon and the other nations.
