THE BIBLICAL DOCTRINE OF DEATH & HELL (NOT WHAT MOST THINK)
There are two doctrines modern Christianity consistently gets wrong—because it inherited them from Greek philosophy and medieval tradition, not Scripture:
    1. What happens at death
    2. What “hell” actually is
When you strip away tradition and return to the text, the Bible teaches something radically different—and far more coherent.

    1. DEATH IS THE END OF CONSCIOUSNESS

The Bible does not teach that humans continue consciously after death. It consistently teaches cessation.

    Psalm 146:4
    “When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
on that very day his thoughts perish.”

    Ecclesiastes 9:5–6, 10
    “The dead know nothing
their love and their hate have perished
there is no work, thought, knowledge or wisdom in Sheol.”

    Job 14:12
    “Man lies down and does not rise;
they will not awake nor be aroused out of sleep.”

    Death = nonexistence, not relocation.

This is why the Bible repeatedly calls death sleep—because consciousness ceases.

And this is why a resurrection is required.
If people were alive and conscious elsewhere, resurrection would be unnecessary.

    2. HUMANS DO NOT HAVE AN INHERENTLY IMMORTAL SOUL

The idea of an immortal soul comes from Plato, not the Prophets.

    Ezekiel 18:4, 20
“The soul who sins shall die.”

The “soul” (nephesh) is the whole person.
    A nephesh can die.
    It is mortal by default.

    1 Timothy 6:16
    God alone possesses immortality.

Immortality is given at resurrection, not innate.

    3. HELL IS NOT A PLACE OF ENDLESS CONSCIOUS TORTURE

This is the biggest misunderstanding of all.

    The Bible teaches:
    • The wicked die.
    • They are destroyed, burned up, consumed, become ashes.
    • The “lake of fire” is the second death (Rev 20:14).
Not one text says humans suffer eternal life in agony.

    Malachi 4:1, 3
The wicked are burned like stubble
the day will burn them up
they will be ashes under your feet.

    Matthew 10:28
God can destroy both body and soul in Gehenna.

Destroy = apollymi = annihilate, make disappear.

    2 Thessalonians 1:9
    “Eternal destruction.”

    Not eternal torment—eternal obliteration.

    Romans 6:23
“The wages of sin is death.”

    Not “eternal conscious suffering.”

    4. WHAT ABOUT “ETERNAL FIRE”?
    Jude 7

Sodom and Gomorrah suffered the punishment of eternal fire.

But Sodom is not burning today.

“Eternal fire” means a fire whose results are eternal.
    The destruction is permanent.

    5. WHY RESURRECTION MATTERS

If people already go to heaven or hell at death, resurrection is redundant.

But Scripture makes resurrection the central hope:
    • Daniel 12:2
    • John 5:28–29
    • 1 Corinthians 15
    • 1 Thessalonians 4
Resurrection is God's answer to the fact that death truly ends life.

    6. SUMMARY OF TEXTUAL INTENT

✔ At death, humans cease to exist
    ✔ No consciousness in Sheol
    ✔ Souls are mortal
✔ Immortality is given only to the righteous
✔ The wicked are destroyed, not tormented
✔ Hell = second death, not eternal torture
✔ Resurrection is required because death is real

    There is nothing sentimental here.
    Just objective Scriptural reality.
