    The Three-Body Answer to Time, the Wave Function, and Prophetic Intervention

    A Relational Thesis on Eternalism, Becoming, the Present, and Divine Engagement
    Abstract

    Eternalism, growing-block theory, and presentism are normally treated as mutually exclusive theories of time. Eternalism holds that past, present, and future all exist; growing-block theory holds that the past and present exist while the future does not yet exist; presentism holds that only the present exists. Because these theories make apparently contradictory claims about what is real, philosophical treatments generally assume that at most one can be correct.

    This thesis proposes a different solution. The contradiction arises only if temporal existence must be absolute and observer-independent. If existence is instead indexed to the relation between an observer and a system, the three theories can describe different but equally real ontological conditions.

    The proposal is modeled through the observer-relative structure of quantum measurement. An observer engaged in an interaction acquires a definite relative fact and updates its state description. An observer not engaged in that interaction may continue to describe the combined system through an uncollapsed unitary state. A third standpoint may accumulate an expanding history of recorded relative facts. These are not merely different levels of knowledge about one absolute state. They are different inventories of what exists relative to each observer-system relation.

    Under this framework, eternalism corresponds to the untied unitary description of the total branching structure; growing-block theory corresponds to the cumulative production of stable relational facts; and presentism corresponds to the immediate actualization of a fact for the observer participating in the current interaction.

    The same structure provides a model for prophecy. A divine frame may permit history to remain genuinely open with respect to intermediate events while declaring that a particular outcome is invariant across all admissible completed histories. Divine intervention then consists not in the continuous determination of every event, but in selective engagement at points where an open historical trajectory would otherwise conflict with the declared outcome. Prophecy is therefore neither mere prediction nor proof that every future detail is already fixed. It is the introduction of a guaranteed boundary condition into a relationally unfolding history.

    1. The Classical Conflict Concerning Time
    Three major theories dominate the metaphysics of time.

    1.1 Eternalism
    Eternalism holds that past, present, and future events are equally real. Reality is a four-dimensional structure in which temporal location is comparable to spatial location. An event does not cease to exist because it is past, nor does it fail to exist because it is future relative to a particular observer.

    Under conventional eternalism, the universe may be represented as a completed history:

    Each event occupies its position within the whole structure. The experience of temporal becoming does not imply that reality itself is being added to. It reflects the location and internal perspective of an observer within the structure.

    1.2 Growing-block theory

    Presentism holds that only the present event or present state exists. Past events no longer exist, although current records of them may exist. Future events do not yet exist, although present expectations and possibilities may refer to them.

    The past may influence the present through memory, records, physical traces, and causal consequences, but those records are present objects. They are not the continued existence of the past events themselves.

    1.4 The apparent contradiction
    If existence is absolute, the three theories cannot all be correct.

    • or entirely causally disconnected from the universe.

    The growing-block observer is not merely engaged in one isolated interaction. It retains stable records of a sequence of interactions.

    The present event is not merely the part of a larger world that the observer happens to notice. It is the event presently actual relative to that observer.

    5. The Three-Body Answer
    The three theories of time are not three competing descriptions of one absolute inventory. They are three ontological structures generated by three relational conditions.

    The term three-body answer refers to this relational configuration. Each “body” occupies a different interactional position with respect to the same system.

    The three perspectives are unified by the indexed existence relation:

    6. Becoming and the Wave Function
    Under this model, becoming is real but not absolute.

    For the presentist observer, becoming is the transition:

    • What exists relative to the observer participating in the present event?
    7. Freedom at the Growing Edge
    This framework permits a distinction between a fixed global structure and genuinely open local continuation.

    For the presentist observer at stage n, let:

    This provides ontological openness, but openness alone is not a complete theory of human freedom. Randomness is not identical to agency. A complete account of freedom must also explain how actions arise from:

    • reasons,
    • intentions,
    • deliberation,
    • character,
    • control,
    • and personal authorship.
    The present framework supplies room in which such agency may operate. It does not claim that quantum indeterminacy itself creates moral freedom.

    8. Divine Relation to the System
    The divine frame is modeled as capable of relating to the total historical structure without remaining continuously engaged in every local fact-producing interaction.

    This does not mean that God is absent from reality or ignorant of it. “Disengaged” means only that God does not determine or collapse every open event through a direct intervention.

    For a created system S, the absence of a particular divine intervention may be represented as:

    9. Prophecy as a Global Constraint
    Prophecy may now be modeled as a declaration that a specified outcome is invariant across all admissible completed histories.

    The presentist observer experiences the conflict as immediate and unresolved. The growing-block observer experiences the accumulated consequences of the conflict as history develops. The eternalist or divine frame contains the total structure in which the declared conclusion is secured.

    Prophecy enters the local present from the frame capable of declaring the global invariant.

    12. Prophetic Intervention Without Continuous Determinism
    The model rejects two extremes.

    The first is exhaustive determinism:

    The second is complete divine nonengagement:

    Instead, the thesis proposes selective engagement:

    Divine action need not determine every choice in order to guarantee the ultimate outcome. It need only ensure that the total course of history does not terminate outside the prophetic boundary condition.

    • the future remains locally open,
    • suffering within the conflict is genuine,
    • divine promises remain certain,
    • and intervention remains purposive rather than continuous.
    Prophecy is therefore not ordinary forecasting. A forecast infers a likely future from present conditions:

    13. Implications
    13.1 The three theories of time need not be absolute competitors
    Eternalism, growing-block theory, and presentism can each be valid when existence is indexed to an observer-system relation.

    They become contradictory only when the observer index is suppressed.

    13.2 Collapse need not be universal
    A definite outcome may exist relative to an engaged observer while an untied observer continues to assign an uncollapsed unitary state.

    Collapse is therefore relational rather than necessarily global.

    13.3 Information update can correspond to real becoming
    The presentist observer’s state update is informational, but the interaction producing the update constitutes a real relational event.

    Becoming is therefore more than a subjective discovery of an already absolute fact.

    13.4 The eternalist frame may be branching
    The total frame need not contain only one predetermined classical history. It may contain a unitary branching structure of histories.

    This permits global completeness without requiring that every local continuation be uniquely fixed.

    13.5 Prophecy may fix outcomes without fixing every path
    A declared endpoint may be invariant across many admissible histories:

    14. Limits of the Model
    This framework does not independently prove:

    1. that relational quantum mechanics is the correct interpretation of quantum theory;
    2. that the wave function is purely informational;
    3. that many-worlds ontology is literally true;
    4. that temporal existence is in fact observer-relative;
    5. that quantum openness is the source of human agency.
    The model instead establishes a narrower conclusion:

    Observer-relative temporal existence, genuine present-tense openness, globally invariant prophetic outcomes, and selective divine intervention can be combined without formal contradiction.

    The proposal is therefore a model of coherence. The authenticity of a specific prophetic text must still be evaluated through textual, historical, theological, and evidential analysis.

    15. Open Questions
    Several questions remain for further development.

    15.1 Cross-frame consistency
    When two observers later interact, what formal rule guarantees that their relative facts become mutually consistent?

    15.2 The nature of the divine frame
    Is the divine relation best represented as an observer within the total structure, the ground of the structure, or a reality not reducible to any physical observer?

    15.3 Knowledge and decree
    Is a prophetic outcome certain because God apprehends the completed structure, because God has decreed the outcome, or because divine knowledge and purpose are inseparable?

    15.4 The scope of prophetic constraints
    Does a prophecy constrain only the final result, or may it also fix intermediate dates, persons, actions, and sequences?

    15.5 Human agency
    What additional account of intention and control is required to distinguish genuine choice from quantum randomness?

    15.6 Conditional prophecy
    How should prophecies that contain explicit or implicit conditions be represented within the space of admissible histories?

    A conditional declaration might take the form:

    Conclusion
    The traditional debate among eternalism, growing-block theory, and presentism assumes that temporal existence must be absolute. Under that assumption, the three theories are mutually exclusive.

    The three-body answer rejects the assumption.

    Existence is indexed to the relation between an observer and a system:

    The untied observer retains the unitary totality and therefore occupies an eternalist frame. The observer carrying an expanding history of stable facts occupies a growing-block frame. The observer participating in the current actualization occupies a presentist frame.

    These are not merely different beliefs about a single absolute reality. They are different relational realities.

    The model then extends to prophecy. History may remain genuinely open with respect to its internal paths while being constrained by a declared invariant outcome:

    [ \mathcal{H}_{\text{admissible}} \subseteq \mathcal{H}_P ]

    Prophetic certainty does not require the exhaustive predetermination of every event. It requires only that every admissible completed history satisfy the declared purpose.

    Divine engagement may therefore be selective rather than continuous. The system is permitted to unfold through real interactions, decisions, and consequences. At points where an open trajectory would conflict with the declared endpoint, the divine frame may engage the system so that the invariant cannot finally fail.

    The result is a relational model in which becoming is real, the present is ontologically significant, accumulated history remains fixed, the total structure is retained, freedom is not automatically erased, and prophecy functions as a guaranteed boundary condition introduced into an otherwise open world.
