"In fact, about eight days after saying these words, he took Peter, John, and James along and climbed up the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face changed and his clothing became glitteringly white. And look! two men were conversing with him; they were Moses and E·liʹjah. These appeared with glory and began talking about his departure, which he was about to fulfill at Jerusalem. Now Peter and those with him were weighed down with sleep, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. And as these were departing from him, Peter said to Jesus: “Instructor, it is fine for us to be here. So let us erect three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for E·liʹjah.” He did not realize what he was saying. But as he was saying these things, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them. As they entered into the cloud, they became afraid. Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying: “This is my Son, the one who has been chosen. Listen to him.” As the voice spoke, Jesus was found alone. But they kept quiet and did not report to anyone in those days any of the things they saw." Luk 9:28-36

The transfiguration, a sign of that which is to come. We see Christ Jesus taking Peter, John and James to a mountain depicting metaphorically the mountain of God, his earthly kingdom. "In the final part of the days, The mountain of the house of Jehovah Will become firmly established above the top of the mountains," (Isaiah 2:2)

While praying Jesus begins to shine brightly, his clothes, face, not unlike Moses's face or Stephens while seeing a representation of God, but yet with Christ he is described as glorious in Revelation; "and his countenance was like the sun when it shines at its brightest." (Rev 1:16)

This depiction of the clouds covering the transfiguration is prophetic of when Jesus returns in the time of the end. "Then the sign of the Son of man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will beat themselves in grief, and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory." (Mth 24:30)

Now we also have depicted here Moses and Elijah. Of course these are simply a vision, for these two men had died long ago, but it's what they represent that is the important factor. These two represent the two witnesses in the time of the end. We know this because Jesus speaks of a future Elijah; "E·liʹjah is indeed coming and will restore all things." (Mth 17:11) While John the baptist was a first century fulfillment of this prophetic Elijah, he as well was dead when Jesus made those remarks. So we still look forward to another fulfillment of Elijah along with Moses in the time of the end in with the two witnesses.

This scene will play out again in the time of the end. When Christ Jesus is enthroned as king he will pour out Holy Spirit on all his people and at such time will resurrect those of his brothers during the last trumpet. Those still alive of his brothers will be transfigured, and no doubt the two witnesses will be seen at that moment transfigured conversing with their lord on their own eminent death. This admittedly may be a bit of speculation on my part, but one things for sure, the transfiguration recorded in Mathew, Mark and Luke is a prophetic event for a moment in the time of the end dealing with Christ Jesus and his two witnesses. While I'm speculating, I could also make the speculation that this could also instead depict the moment the two witnesses are resurrected after their death, at which point would fulfill the whole world seeing this event. In any case I don't quite have a clear image into the haze mirror of this end time fulfillment.
