That guitar looks like one of mine. Only mine has six strings. ;) I couldn't read the manufacturer's label, but everything else is like mine. I haven't played it in years.

Here's one I've loved from the first time I heard it. The story behind it would make a great Broadway play.

Tom Petty - "Runnin' Down A Dream"

I remember when this song first came out - I used to listen to it on the radio while driving to and from work on the highway.

Né en 17 à Leidenstadt - Jean Goldman / Carole Fredericks / Michael Jones*

Et si j'étais né en 17 à Leidenstadt And if I was ever born in 1917 in Leidenstadt
Sur les ruines d'un champ de bataille Among the ruins of a battlefield
Aurais-je été meilleur ou pire que ces gens Would I have been better or worse than those people
Si j'avais été allemand ? If I had ever been German ?

Bercé d'humiliation, de haine et d'ignorance Brought up from infancy with humiliation, hatred and ignorance
Nourri de rêves et de revanche Fed with dreams and revenge
Aurais-je été de ces improbables consciences Would I have been among those unlikely consciences ?
Larmes au milieu d'un torrent Tears amid a torrent

Si j'avais grandi dans les docklands de Belfast If I had ever grown up in the docklands of Belfast
Soldat d'une foi, d'une caste Soldier of a faith, of a cast
Aurais-je eu la force envers et contre les miens Would I have had the strength in the face of all opposition from my own kind
De trahir: tendre une main To betray : to reach out a hand

Si j'étais née blanche et riche à Johannesburg If I was ever born white and rich in Johannesburg
Entre le pouvoir et la peur Between power and fear
Aurais-je entendu ces cris portés par le vent Would I have heard those cries carried by the wind ?
Rien ne sera comme avant Nothing will ever be the same.

    Refrain:
On saura jamais c'qu'on a vraiment dans nos ventres We will never know what our guts will ever be worth
Cachés derrière nos apparences Hidden behind our appearances
L'âme d'un brave ou d'un complice ou d'un bourreau? The soul of a fearless man, of an accomplice or of a torturer
Ou le pire ou plus beau ? Either the worst or the nicest ?
Serions-nous de ceux qui résistent ou bien les moutons d'un troupeau Would we be among those who resist or just the sheep of a flock ?
S'il fallait plus que des mots ? If more than words was ever needed ?

Et si j'étais né en 17 à Leidenstadt And if I was ever born in 1917 in Leidenstadt
Sur les ruines d'un champ de bataille Among the ruins of a battlefield
Aurais-je été meilleur ou pire que ces gens Would I have been better or worse than those people
Si j'avais été allemand ? If I had ever been German ?

Et qu'on nous épargne à toi et moi si possible très longtemps And let them spare us, you and me if possible for ages,
D'avoir à choisir un camp To have to take a side.

    * The town mentionned here, Leidenstadt, doesn't exist. It's made up with two German words "Leiden" = sufferings and "Stadt" = town. Carole Fredericks was a black American singer (she sings the couplet about Johannesburg) and Michael Jones a Welsh singer (he sings the couplet about Belfast). Jean Jacques Goldman is a Jew.

When I was working in a school with pupils some years ago, I heard about an incident that had occured someplace around here because a few French pupils, upon noticing that some other kids nearby were German kids making an excursion, had begun insulting them and throwing stones at them. The French teachers were utterly outraged by what had happened and immediately convoked the parents of the kids involved for a serious discussion about it and we all[SUP]#[/SUP] were devastated when we heard about that incident.

Enough hatred, enough sufferings ! Please, stop it !

    Utuna,
I loved that song - Né en 17 à Leidenstadt.
Thanks for fixing the insert for videos.

    Frank,
October Project. One of my favorite groups. I wish they were still together. They wrote some great songs.

So here's one about looking for truth. With lyrics below.

Show Me The Way - Styx - Dennis DeYoung

Every night I say a prayer in the hopes that there's a heaven
And every day I'm more confused as the saints turn into sinners
All the heroes and legends I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay
And I feel this empty place inside so afraid that I've lost my faith

Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the river
    And wash my illusions away
    Please show me the way

And as I slowly drift to sleep, for a moment dreams are sacred
I close my eyes and know there's peace in a world so filled with hatred
That I wake up each morning and turn on the news to find we've so far to go
And I keep on hoping for a sign, so afraid I just won't know

Show me the way, Show me the way
Bring me tonight to the mountain
    And take my confusion away
    And show me the way

And if I see your light, should I believe
Tell me how will I know

    (Instrumental)

Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the river
    And wash my illusions away
Show me the way, show me the way
Give me the strength and the courage
To believe that I'll get there someday
And please show me the way

Every night I say a prayer
In the hopes that there's a heaven...

liked them both , but used the one I thought
would conversely affect those connected to
my other pages ...there are times you want
to sit and extract the thoughts that made
ones put to music what they wrote ....guess
I have always confronted thoughts of others.
but I have only one comparison to lay them
next to ...they all lie within the labryrinth
and I only get to consider the paths they
have trod to get there ...

    La Corrida - Francis Cabrel

Depuis le temps que je patiente Since I have been here, waiting
Dans cette chambre noire In this dark room
J'entends qu'on s'amuse et qu'on chante I have heard people having fun and singing
    Au bout du couloir ; At the end of the corridor ;
Quelqu'un a touché le verrou Someone touched the bolt
Et j'ai plongé vers le grand jour And I rushed into broad daylight
J'ai vu les fanfares, les barrières I saw the fanfare, the barriers
Et les gens autour And the people all around

Dans les premiers moments, j'ai cru At first, I thought
Qu'il fallait seulement se défendre That I only had to defend myself
Mais cette place est sans issue But there aren't exits to this place
Je commence à comprendre I'm beginning to understand
Ils ont refermé derrière moi They closed the doors behind me
Ils ont eu peur que je recule Lest I may draw back
Je vais bien finir par l'avoir Sooner or later, I'm going to catch her
Cette danseuse ridicule... This ridiculous dancer...

Est-ce que ce monde est sérieux ? (x2) Is this world serious ?*

Andalousie je me souviens Andalusia I remember
Les prairies bordées de cactus The meadows borded with cactus
Je ne vais pas trembler devant I'm not going to tremble in front of
Ce pantin, ce minus ! That puppet, that titch !
Je vais l'attraper, lui et son chapeau I'm going to catch him, with his hat
Les faire tourner comme un soleil And make them both spin round, upside down
Ce soir la femme du torero Tonight, the bullfighter's wife
Dormira sur ses deux oreilles Will sleep on both his ears.#

Est-ce que ce monde est sérieux ? (x2) Is this world serious ?

J'en ai poursuivi des fantômes I chased many of them, of ghosts
Presque touché leurs ballerines Almost touched their ballet shoes
Ils ont frappé fort dans mon cou They struck me hard in the neck
Pour que je m'incline So I bow down
Ils sortent d'où ces acrobates Where do those acrobats come from
Avec leurs costumes de papier ? Dressed like this, with costumes of paper ?
J'ai jamais appris à me battre I was never taught to battle
    Contre des poupées Against dolls

Sentir le sable sous ma tête Feeling the sand under my head
C'est fou comme ça peut faire du bien It feels so good
J'ai prié pour que tout s'arrête I prayed for all this to stop
Andalousie je me souviens Andalusia I remember
Je les entends rire comme je râle I can hear them laughing as I'm gasping
Je les vois danser comme je succombe I can see them dancing as I'm succumbing
Je pensais pas qu'on puisse autant I didn't know that one could have
S'amuser autour d'une tombe so much fun around a tomb

Est-ce que ce monde est sérieux ? (x2) Is this world serious ?

Si, si hombre, hombre Yes, yes man, man
    Baila, baila Dance, dance
Hay que bailar de nuevo You gotta dance again
Y mataremos otros And we will kill other ones
Otras vidas, y otros toros Other lives, and other bulls
Y mataremos otros And we will kill other ones
Venga, venga a bailar... Come, come and dance...
Y mataremos otros And we will kill other ones

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    * Can also be translated by : Do these people really mean it ? Do they really mean it to happen this way?
"Monde" means the world but also a crowd, people in general.

    # Here, there is a play on words. It also makes reference to the custom of cutting off one ear to the bull as a prize for the bullfighter once the show is over.

    Hey Frank,
Here's one of my fav's. Thought you'd enjoy this.

Mary Fahl - Ariel - Solo

  11. Hi Tsaphah:

You are the first person I know that knew who she was besides my late wife. She fell in love with the music of October Project in the mid 90's and I immediately liked them as well. Her voice is magnificent. After two only marginally successful albums in I think '93 and '94 they were dropped from their record label and shortly after that broke up.

Other members of the group resurfaced as November Project without Mary Fahl, but that did not last. They have in the last couple years made a comeback as October Project but without Mary Fahl, they don't do it for me. Ariel is a beautiful song, that is for sure.

I had stopped at Tower where a friend worked. The song was playing and I was immediately attracted to the voice. Something about the quality and soothing sound of it. I bought the album. Got home and played it over and over. In some ways Mary Fahl reminds me of Eva Cassidy. Here's one of hers.

    Enjoy.

For some reason, this thing did not post my response. So "here we go again". (Isn't that a song?)

    Utuna,
I cried at the end of this one. When I was young and stupid, I studied Bull Fighting. I knew it inside out. All the greats, Juan Belmonte García, Manolete, Joselito, Galito, etc., used to be my hero's. Then, as I grew older I realized the reality of it all and how cruel it was for the victim. This song says it all. No way out accept the hooks in the back legs and dragged out by horses.

Yes, an ear, or two, even a tail as a prize. The whole process has become disgusting to me. Of course there is more to it than the matador de toros, with his "traje de luces" (suit of lights), the toreros, picadors, and banderilleros. And they call it bullfighting. Ha! That suit of lights is where the saying, "dressed to kill" comes from. It was all part of the ceremony.

A very touching song from the victims point of view. Especially the play on words. For the bull, "Yes, they really did mean that."

    But, ... On another note.

    Ahh, P.O.P.,
Steve Winwood, and Spencer Davis Group. Brings back many memories. Weeeee.

So here's one for those that had the question of the org being our mother.

Just in case you can't hear the words, I include the lyrics below.

Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb
Mother do you think they'll like this song
Mother do you think they'll try to break my balls
Ooooh aah, Mother should I build a wall

Mother should I run for president
Mother should I trust the government
Mother will they put me in the firing line
Ooooh aah, is it it just a waste of time

Hush now baby baby don't you cry
Mama's gonna make all of your nightmares come true
Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you
Mama's gonna keep you right here under her wing
She won't let you fly but she might let you sing
Mamas gonna keep baby cosy and warm
Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe
Of course Mama's gonna help build the wall

    (Short solo guitar instrumental)

Mother do think she's good enough . . . for me
Mother do think she's dangerous . . . to me
Mother will she tear your little boy apart
Oooh aah, mother will she break my heart

Hush now baby, baby don't you cry
Mama's gonna check out all your girl friends for you
Mama won't let anyone dirty get through
Mama's gonna wait up until you get in
Mama will always find out where you've been
Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean
Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe
You'll always be a baby to me

Mother, did it need to be so high.
