The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter like wormwood oil, and many people died from the bitter waters." Rev 8:10,11 "Lest there be among you man or woman or family or tribe whose heart turns away today from YHWH our God, to go and serve the gods of those nations, lest there be among you a root bearing gall and wormwood." Deut 29:18 "Though the lips of the forbidden woman drip honey and her speech is smoother than oil, in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a double-edged sword." Prov 5:3,4 "Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: "Behold, I will feed this people wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink." Jer 9:5 "Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says concerning the prophets: "I will feed them wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink, for from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land." Jer 23:15 "Seek the LORD and live, or He will sweep like fire through the house of Joseph; with no one at Bethel to extinguish it, It will devour everything. There are those who turn justice into wormwood and cast righteousness to the ground." Amos 5:6,7 "The great house will be smashed to pieces, and the small house to rubble. Do horses gallop on the cliffs? Does one plow the seab with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood—you who rejoice in Lo-debarc and say, ‘Did we not take Karnaimd by our own strength?’ For behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD, the God of Hosts." Amos 6:11-14 ------- Exodus 15:25 Jehovah shows Moses an עֵץ; it is cast into bitter waters; waters become sweet Ezekiel 37:16-22 Two עֵץ pieces are Judah and Joseph/Ephraim; joined into one; Israel is gathered/restored as one nation under one king Ezekiel 17:22-24 Jehovah plants a cedar-sprig on Israel's mountain; low tree exalted; dry tree made to flourish Ezekiel 47:7-12 Healing waters from the sanctuary; trees by the river; fruit for food; leaves for healing ------- The same Hebrew object-word עֵץ appears in Exodus 15 and Ezekiel 37, and Ezekiel 37 explicitly identifies the עֵץ pieces with Judah and Joseph/Ephraim being restored into one Israel under one king. "If you will listen carefully to the voice of YHWH your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and you give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes; all of the diseases that I have brought on Egypt I will not put on you, for I am YHWH who heals you." Exe 15:26 Exodus 15:25: Jehovah gives mišpāṭ at bitter waters Bitter made sweet through Jehovah’s instruction Amos 5:7: Israel turns mišpāṭ into wormwood Judgment/justice made bitter through apostasy Exodus 15:26 says: If Israel listens to Jehovah's voice and keeps His statutes, He will not put Egypt's diseases on them, because He is their healer. Jeremiah 9:13-15 says the inverse: Because they forsook Jehovah's law, did not obey His voice, and walked after Baal, Jehovah will feed them wormwood and give them waters of gall to drink. "If a feeling of jealousy comes over her husband and he suspects his wife who has defiled herself-or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he suspects her even though she has not defiled herself- 15 then he is to bring his wife to the priest." Num 5:14,15 "After the priest has the woman stand before the LORD, he is to let down her hair and place in her hands the grain offering of memorial, which is the grain offering for jealousy. The priest is to hold the bitter water that brings a curse. And he is to put the woman under oath and say to her, 'If no other man has slept with you and you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband's authority, may you be immune to this bitter water that brings a curse." Num 5:18,19 Before Ezekiel 37's dry bones, Jehovah says: "Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean..." Ezekiel 36:25 Then immediately: "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you..." Ezekiel 36:26 Ezekiel 36 clean water, new heart, new spirit Ezekiel 37:1–14 dry bones live by breath/spirit Ezekiel 37:15–22 Judah and Joseph become one stick/one nation Ezekiel 37:24–28 one king/shepherd, covenant of peace, sanctuary among them Hosea 3:1-2: "Then said Jehovah unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of Jehovah toward the children of Israel..." Then Hosea says: "So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley." Numbers 5 says the barley offering must have: no oil and no frankincense. Hosea 2 says Israel used Jehovah's gifts wrongly: "For she did not know that I gave her corn/grain, and wine, and oil... which they prepared for Baal." – Hosea 2:8 Numbers 5 strips the jealousy offering of oil and frankincense because it is not a joyful fellowship offering. Hosea shows why: the adulterous wife has misused Jehovah's gifts. In Numbers 5, barley is placed in the hands of the suspected wife as the jealousy offering that brings hidden iniquity to remembrance. In Hosea 3, barley is part of the redemption price paid for an adulterous woman who explicitly represents Israel. Together, these passages show barley connected with covenant infidelity, jealousy, exposure, discipline, and eventual restoration.
